Myth vs Fact: Is bed rest best for back pain?
For most back pain, staying gently active helps more than lying down. Here’s why.
Safety first
Stop any exercise that sharply increases pain, and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
Myth: If your back hurts, rest in bed until the pain goes.
Fact: For most people with non-specific low back pain, prolonged bed rest can slow recovery. Gentle movement — short walks, changing position often, and simple exercises — keeps muscles and joints working and often eases pain sooner.
What helps instead
- Keep moving within comfort, even if slowly.
- Change position every 30–45 minutes.
- Use simple pain relief as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.
- Ask a physiotherapist for a graded exercise plan.
When to get help quickly
Seek urgent care if you have loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, new leg weakness, fever, or pain after a serious fall.
